Matka Canyon: Your Complete Guide

Deep canyon views of Matka Canyon in North Macedonia
Your Complete Guide (Matka Canyon, North Macedonia)

Here’s your complete guide to visiting Matka Canyon – North Macedonia’s secret gem! This natural wonder is a must see for anyone in the area no matter if you’re on a short trip or a long one.

We recently went to North Macedonia and Skopje was our first stop. We arrived after an overnight flight from the U.S. and hit the ground running with a full day of walking in Skopje. Then our itinerary had us visiting Matka Canyon the next day but we were exhausted. We seriously considered skipping the canyon and resting up for the next part of our southeastern Europe trip. Time was of the essence.

Ok, ok! I was hoping to rest. Beck was ready to go. As usual: she is the “grit” behind our travels.

You guessed it. Beck won that debate and we are so glad we went.

Let’s get started and explore Matka Canyon’s wonders, from its landscapes to its history and activities.

Matka Canyon

Canyon Cliffs (Matka Canyon, North Macedonia)

A place where cliffs meet the sky and crystal clear water winds through a green valley — that is Matka Canyon. It’s a natural wonder in the heart of North Macedonia, only 17 km from Skopje. Matka Canyon is a haven for those who want to get away from the city and immerse themselves in nature.

The canyon was created when a dam was built on the River Treska in 1938 and Matka Canyon covers around 5,000 hectares (12,000 acres). Matka Lake, the man made lake created by the dam, is a playground for visitors who want to escape the city life of Skopje. Today it’s home to activities, wildlife and landscapes for every kind of adventurer.

Best time to visit Matka Canyon is from late spring to early fall, May to September. During these months the weather is mild and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking and exploring the canyon’s limestone cliffs and blue water. Summer months, June to August are warm and perfect for water activities but also the busiest with more visitors.

If you want a quieter experience with fewer people visit in late spring (May) or early autumn (September). During these months the weather is still nice and the surrounding flora is in bloom adding extra charm to your adventure. Avoid winter months from November to February as the weather is cold and unpredictable and some of the activities and trails might be limited.

Matka Canyon has a few basic facilities but no full blown tourist complex. Near the parking and bus stop there are two restaurants and a few kiosks with cold drinks and ice cream. If you want a full meal there’s a large waterfront restaurant and bar but prices are a bit higher due to its location.

We were surprised to find out that there’s a charge for the (clean and nice) toilets (60 Macedonian denar). We didn’t see this mentioned anywhere in our online research.
