Getting to San Juan’s Beaches

Many of San Juan’s beaches are within walking distance from the cruise port

No matter where you begin your journey in San Juan, there are several different options available to you to get to your preferred beach.

  • Taxi. Taxis are readily available at the port, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, and really anywhere else in San Juan you may need one (including designated taxi stands, tourist attractions and hotels). You can also simply hail a taxi on the street or call one for a scheduled pick-up. Trips around San Juan in a taxi are based on a metered fare and drivers accept credit cards – but be sure to advise the driver in advance if you’re paying with this method. Taxi drivers are appreciative of tips, with 10-15% being standard.

  • Uber (which we chose to use on several occasions) is also a popular option to get around San Juan – and the only formal rideshare service available in Puerto Rico. Be sure to download the Uber app in advance to make it easy to request a ride once you’re on the island.

Insider tipOld San Juan can get easily clogged with traffic at any time of the day. If you find yourself here and are keen to head outside the Old City Walls to the beach, we recommend walking to just outside the Old San Juan limits and hailing a taxi or Uber from there. We found Av. Luis Muñoz Rivera at Plaza Colon an excellent place for Uber drivers to easily find and pick us up without any bottleneck traffic in the way.

  • Walking. San Juan is a relatively compact and easily walkable city. Pathways are well-maintained and signage is excellent. Some of the beaches we recommend below are within walking distance from the San Juan Cruise Port.

  • Rent a bike. If you’re not up for walking, or would prefer to try something a little different, you can also rent bikes to help you get around San Juan (including to the beaches).

  • San Juan also has its own local bus network (Autoridad Metropolitana de Autobuses, or AMA) and light rail system (San Juan’s metro, Tren Urbano), serving the city’s metropolitan area. Buses run every day except Sunday, with service during the week generally operating from 5am to 9pm, and from 6am to 8pm on Saturdays and holidays. Trains run every 16 minutes for most hours of the day.

  • Rent a car. This is an excellent option, especially if you want to explore a little further afield. Cars can be rented from the Luiz Muñoz Marín International Airport, affording you the luxury of exploring in and around San Juan more independently: on your own terms and at your own speed.

The Finest Beaches of San Juan!

The coastline of San Juan Puerto Rico

Balneario El Escambrón

The closest beach to the San Juan Cruise Port – and therefore convenient for those short on time or without access to a rental car – is Balneario del Escambrón, also known (in English) as Escambrón Beach. Just a short drive of 15 minutes, or a half hour walk from your cruise ship and other central locations, Escambrón Beach is a popular public beach, known for its cleanliness and stunning beauty (think crystal-clear waters, swaying palm trees and powdery white sand – and an excellent view of historic landmarks that include the Capitol Building and Castillo San Felipe del Morro to boot!).

Whilst Escambrón Beach is a relatively small beach, its calm waters and ease-of-access to other nearby attractions consistently make it a favorite amongst both locals and visitors alike. Here you can also rent beach chairs, umbrellas, and water sports equipment (including snorkeling gear) – and with lifeguards on duty, clean public restrooms with outdoor showers, and shaded areas, this makes for an incredibly family-friendly outing.

Escambrón Beach is also conveniently located near a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops, making it an ideal spot for a full day out. The scenic walking path directly behind the beach provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape – perfect for a leisurely stroll after you’ve filled up on some local Puerto Rican cuisine. You’re also likely to see a lot of large, brightly-colored geckos on the nearby rocks!

One of the biggest draws for Escambrón Beach, however, is its location within the Escambrón Marine Park. This protected area – enclosed by a series of coral reefs and other natural, submerged breakwaters – is home to a diverse array of marine life, including schools of blue tangs (think Dory!), brain coral, sea turtles (it’s quite incredible to watch them munching on sea grass only a few feet below the surface!) and numerous other colorful fish. There’s even a collapsed bridge beneath the water’s surface that divers and snorkelers often explore!

Indeed, the area as a whole is particularly popular for snorkeling and scuba diving – for the best snorkeling from shore, head toward the giant rock (Peñon de San Jorge) directly across from the center of the beach (we hear the west side of the rock is best), else consider taking a snorkeling tour to explore the underwater world with a professional guide.

Insider tip. If you are driving here with your own vehicle, there is secure parking available for a small fee. Make sure to bring cash for payment.

Insider tip. This is one of the few beaches in San Juan that offers a decent amount of shade, thanks to the large palm trees spread throughout.

Recreational spaces at Escambrón Beach San Juan, Puerto Rico

Another highlight of Escambrón Beach are the two large green recreational spaces that back on to it: Parque Luis Muñoz Rivera and Parque del Tercer Milenio (The Third Millennium Park). Both parks provide attractive open urban spaces near Old San Juan with lush environments, wide open lawns, various sculpture installations, and shaded areas for respite from the scorching Puerto Rican sun.

Condado Beach

View toward Condado Beach San Juan, Puerto Rico

View toward Condado Beach (San Juan, Puerto Rico)

About 4km (2.5mi) east of the San Juan Cruise Port – and a pleasant 30-minute stroll from Escambrón Beach – you’ll find Condado Beach, a lively white sand stretch of urban beach lined with high-end resorts and high-rise condos located in the Santurce district of San Juan. The beach affords visitors a more typical Caribbean beach resort feel, and is popular amongst weekend locals and out-of-town vacationers alike.

Insider tip. Not up for walking all the way to Condado? No worries! The beach is also easily accessible by bike, or a short taxi or Uber ride from Old San Juan or the cruise terminal. The Tren Urbano and San Juan’s local bus network can also drop you right at the beach’s doorstep.

Whilst swimming isn’t encouraged in the main section of Condado Beach due to its sometimes dangerous currents (watch out for the red flags and listen to instructions from lifeguards when given), it still offers visitors beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean: think picture-postcard-perfect golden sand meets deep turquoise waters. Condado is also an excellent location to try your hand at parasailing, sailing, diving, snorkeling or surfing.

These water activities aside, the ever-popular Condado Beach isn’t just about the water – it’s also famed for its overall vibe and endless array of other things to do, from simply lounging by the water to sipping cool drinks at trendy beach bars and lounges, to eating local food from local vendors and enjoying some people-watching … and everything in between. Condado is also well known for its vibrant music scene – you’ll no doubt come across some sort of live music during your time here, often a highlight of any visit. Let’s be honest – if you’re looking for somewhere that feels like a tropical version of California’s South Beach, Florida’s Miami Beach, or Hawaii’s Waikiki, then Condado is it!

At the eastern end of Condado Beach you’ll find La Ventana al Mar (“Window to the Sea”), a large 1.8-hectare green public park built in 2004 that has won numerous awards for design excellence. The park is a wonderful recreational area that includes a large ornamental fountain, several sculptures, and is the site for annual music festivals and weekend markets, fairs and live music each Sunday. You can also indulge in outdoor yoga sessions and aqua fitness classes at La Ventana al Mar.

Access to Condado Beach is free and it’s open daily from dawn to dusk.

Insider tip. Although there is usually plenty of space for everyone, try to get to Condado Beach early for the best “spot” on the sand.

Insider tip. Condado Beach is known for having strong undercurrents: if you’re not a strong swimmer or are travelling with children, we don’t recommend venturing too deep into the water. For a safer swimming and snorkeling option with calmer waters, head to Playita del Condado, a smaller beach nestled into a protective cove at the western edge of the main beach.

Insider tip. Many comprehensive city tours of San Juan include a stop at Condado Beach.

Playa Ocean Park

Playa Ocean Park in the late afternoon San Juan, Puerto Rico

Playa Ocean Park in the late afternoon (San Juan, Puerto Rico)

Just to the east of Condado Beach (about 10 minutes by car, or 45 minutes by foot if you’re feeling particularly active!), you’ll find the 2-mile long, soft-sand, public-access Playa Ocean Park (Ocean Park Beach) in Santurce – the largest beach in San Juan.

Unlike the high-energy resort scene of Condado, Playa Ocean Park is known for its laid-back, residential vibe, making it a favorite amongst locals: this is where residents walk their dogs and you’ll see kids playing volleyball. It’s also particularly popular amongst local surfers, paddle-boarders and windsurfers, with gentle surf and consistent waves still calm enough for swimming. If you’re feeling adventurous, try taking a kitesurfing lesson from a local!

Whilst it’s still very much an urban beach, Ocean Park feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city’s rhythm: lined with palm trees and backed by colorful San Juan homes and boutique guesthouses, this beach invites leisurely strolls along the shoreline, uninterrupted sunbathing, and spontaneous dips in the water. And even though it may be large, Playa Ocean Park doesn’t get as crowded as some of the other beaches in San Juan – so it’s also great for those seeking a more peaceful beach experience.

Insider tip. There aren’t many facilities directly on the beach at Ocean Park. Some local vendors do sell snacks and drinks nearby, but if you need to use a restroom or are seeking some respite from the blazing sun, consider taking a short walk toward Loíza Street.

Insider tip. Access to Ocean Park Beach can be challenging, if only because it is best accessed from the end of residential streets. We also recommend taking a taxi or Uber here, as parking can be hard to find.

Fun fact. Ocean Park Beach was once known as Ultimo Trolley Beach, as it was the site of the San Juan-Condado streetcar line terminal.

Playa Isla Verde

For a quieter beach experience than, for example, Condado, and only 15 minutes by road east of the San Juan Cruise Port, consider a visit to Isla Verde Beach (Playa Isla Verde) in Carolina. This beach is one of the best in San Juan’s metropolitan area (and sometimes even cited as one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico!), well-known for its swaying palm trees, powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters, perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

Thanks to natural reef breaks, Isla Verde’s waters are especially gentle, creating ideal conditions for casual swimmers and those with young families. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities here for jet-skiing and parasailing.

Note that Isla Verde Beach is technically made up of three smaller beaches:

  • Pine Grove (located at the far eastern end, where you’ll often see locals surfing and paddle-boarding)

  • Alambique (a more tranquil strip of sand with laid-back beach bars, right in the middle), and

  • Balneario de Carolina (at the westernmost end of Isla Verde, where you’ll find lifeguards, restrooms and plenty of open parking – it’s known to be one of the best-maintained public beaches on the entire island!)

The entire strip of Isla Verde Beach offers visitors several other practical amenities, including well-priced beach chairs, umbrellas, and water sports equipment rentals. The beach is also lined with numerous restaurants, bars and shops, providing plenty of options for keeping your tummy and hands full. Food vendors also adorn the beach – try some handmade empanadas, freshly-squeezed pineapple juice, or a fresh coconut whilst you’re there! Oh, and if you’re up for a leisurely stroll after all that eating and lounging around, consider taking a walk along the scenic walking path beside the beach, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

If you’re looking to relax, unwind, and simply soak up some Caribbean rays – with some rare shade to boot! – Isla Verde Beach could definitely be the place for you!

Insider tip. Isla Verde Beach is very close to the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, which makes it a wonderful destination for sunbathing and for plane-spotting!

La Noche de San Juan

Playa Chatarra Puerto Rico

Playa Chatarra (Puerto Rico)

Do you love beaches? Do you perhaps love a good beach party even more? If your travels bring you to San Juan in late June, consider joining in the festivities associated with La Noche de San Juan (in English, Saint John’s Night).

La Noche de San Juan is a well-known celebration amongst Puerto Ricans, celebrated each year on the evening of June 23. This festival – a spirited annual tradition spent on the beach – marks the eve of the feast celebrated in honor of the birth of Saint John the Baptist (June 24).

Complete with bonfires lighting up the sand, beach parties, live music and DJs, traditional food, and several deeply-rooted cultural Puerto Rican rituals (think jumping over bonfires, making wishes, and diving at least three times backward into the ocean at midnight!), La Noche de San Juan is a time for community and celebration, of cleansing negativity from the mind and body, and a marking of the start of summer.

Fun fact. With its roots in ancient pagan celebrations, La Noche de San Juan coincides with the general timing of the summer solstice.

Whether you choose to participate in the full ritual that is La Noche de San Juan, or you wish to simply watch from a wee distance and enjoy the music, dancing and atmosphere, this annual event is a powerful reminder that Puerto Rico’s beaches play a much larger role in its culture than simply being scenic backdrops – they are living spaces of history, culture, and celebration.

Insider tip. To celebrate like a true local during Saint John’s Night, we recommend arriving at your preferred beach (San Juan basically becomes one huge beach party on June 23 – but any beach in Puerto Rico will do!) early enough to find yourself a comfortable spot near the shoreline. Popular beaches fill up quickly and parking may be limited. Also, be prepared to stay up late and to get wet!

Fun fact. Jumping over bonfires symbolizes the purification and renewal that fire is believed to bring. Writing wishes on paper and then burning them in the bonfires is believed to help make these wishes come true.
