Lake Ohrid: An Expanding Ecosystem

Expanding Ecosystem Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Expanding Ecosystem Lake Ohrid (Ohrid, North Macedonia)

Water temperature

Lake Ohrid is a natural wonder with several unique physical and chemical characteristics, making it one of the most interesting lakes in the world. The water temperature varies throughout the year, from an average of 18°C (64°F) in the summer months to a slightly-more-chilly 10°C (50°F) in winter. These seasonal temperature changes create a dynamic environment for the lake’s ecosystem.

Water clarity

One of Lake Ohrid’s most impressive features is its water clarity. The lake’s crystal clear waters are a result of its oligotrophic nature (don’t worry, we had to Google that one too! – it basically means the water contains relatively low levels of plant and algae nutrients, but an abundance of oxygen in deeper parts of the lake), providing visibility of up to 22m (72ft) in some areas. This clarity helps create the natural beauty of the lake, and generates conditions almost perfect for swimming and diving.

Water pH and salinity levels

The pH of Lake Ohrid is slightly alkaline, between 8.0 and 8.5, which further supports life in the water. The salinity of Lake Ohrid is low, around 0.5 parts per thousand (that is, there are only 0.5 grams of salt dissolved in every 1,000 grams of the lake’s water), which contributes to its unique species composition. The water level of Lake Ohrid varies throughout the year, with the highest levels in spring and summer, adding another layer to this ancient lake’s ecosystem.

Lake Ohrid and Sustainability Efforts

Sustainability Efforts Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Sustainability Efforts Lake Ohrid (Ohrid, North Macedonia)

As with all natural wonders, Lake Ohrid faces its fair share of challenges.

Overfishing, invasive species, and climate change all threaten Lake Ohrid’s ecosystem. We were grateful to learn that conservation efforts are underway to protect the biodiversity of the lake: several protected areas have been established, and sustainable fishing practices are currently being implemented.

Tourism plays a large part in Ohrid’s economy, especially during the high season (summer months). Unfortunately, the influx of visitors during this time puts pressure on the lake’s resources: sustainable tourism is key to keeping Ohrid and its surrounding region peaceful, beautiful, and a place we’ll be able to visit and enjoy for many years to come.

As visitors to Ohrid, we can assist local conservation efforts by choosing eco-friendly tour operators, reducing waste, carrying out trash, and respecting the lake. Also consider staying in eco-friendly accommodation, supporting local businesses and tour operators, and minimizing your overall impact. Always respect local customs and traditions: making a meaningful connection with Ohrid’s local community will go a long way to supporting not only this beautiful town, but to also creating for yourself an incredibly memorable stay!

Don’t forget, every little bit counts in preserving the town’s history and the natural wonder of Lake Ohrid. And don’t forget the old-age traveler’s adage: take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints.

Ali Pasha Mosque Ohrid, North Macedonia

Ali Pasha Mosque (Ohrid, North Macedonia)

The town of Ohrid is one of North Macedonia’s most popular destinations. Nicknamed the “Jerusalem of the Balkans”, it was once home to over 365 churches – one for each day of the year. The Old Town of Ohrid is complete with 9th and 10th century architecture, offering historical sites that include early Christian basilicas and Byzantine churches.

In the Middle Ages, Ohrid was a center of learning and spirituality, with the Eastern Orthodox monasteries playing a large role in spreading Christianity throughout the Balkans. The Church of St. John at Kaneo, overlooking the lake (and one of Beck’s most favorite places in Ohrid!), is a religious and historical landmark.

Wandering through the narrow streets of Ohrid’s Old Town you’ll discover hidden gems: from ancient ruins to centuries-old frescoes. The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, preserved since the fall of the Roman Empire, but not discovered until the 1980s, is another example of the town’s history. Today it hosts summer concerts and performances.

Things To Do In Ohrid

Church of St. John Ohrid, North Macedonia

Church of St. John (Ohrid, North Macedonia)

There is plenty to see and do in Ohrid! Consider adding the following to your itinerary.

Church of St. Sophia

Just around the corner from our accommodation, we stumbled across this beautiful 10th century church on one of our first walks through the Old Town. According to historians, the Church of St Sophia is one of the most important medieval monuments in North Macedonia, offering visitors the opportunity to view its beautiful frescoes and beautiful domes, right in the heart of the Old Town.

Church of St. John at Kaneo

You simply cannot miss making your way to this church, which lies atop a cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid. Visit on foot or by boat – either way, you won’t regret this incredibly picturesque Ohrid landmark, a photographer’s paradise. The combination of this church’s location, the views over the lake, and the monastery’s eastern Orthodox origins and architecture are truly magical.

Samuel’s Fortress

Love castles? Ancient fortresses? Then don ‘t miss Samuel’s Fortress, one of the largest medieval fortification constructions in Macedonia and the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire during the rule of Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria at the turn of the 11th century. Samuel’s Fortress dominates the skyline, sitting above the town of Ohrid, with its ramparts and fortified towers occupying the entire Ohrid hill. The fortress offers spectacular views of Lake Ohrid and beyond, and is testament to Ohrid’s importance in the Middle Ages.

Bay of Bones Museum

A little further afield, but definitely worth considering for a visit, is this museum. Go back in time with a visit to this fascinating archaeological complex, a reconstruction of an ancient dwelling settlement. It provides visitors a unique glimpse into life in the prehistoric era, right on the shores of Lake Ohrid. You can get here either by road or boat.

Saint Naum Monastery

A little further down the road from the Bay of Bones Museum, you’ll find the Church (or Monastery) of Saint Naum – and, like many recommendations you’ll find here, it’s a must-see! Located at the southern end of Lake Ohrid, this monastery has some of the most beautiful views of the lake.

Eating and Drinking in Ohrid

Cuisine Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Eating and Drinking (Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia)

No visit to Ohrid is complete without trying the local cuisine. North Macedonia’s food is a mix of Mediterranean and Balkan, and has something for everyone (yes, even for Beck, who is generally a very fussy eater!).

Consider tantalizing your taste buds with one (or more!) of the following:

  • Fresh fish from the lake: Ohrid is most famous for its trout!

  • Burek: an eastern European flaky pastry often served at breakfast (though good at any time of day!), filled with anything from cheese to meat to potato to spinach … and anything in between!

  • Kebapi: small grilled sausages, similar to kebabs, made with ground beef, pork or lamb, and finished off with an amazing array of spices; these tender, juicy sausages are often served with bread and onions.

  • Ajvar: a condiment/spread made from roasted red bell peppers and eggplant (if you don’t try this, you haven’t truly experienced North Macedonia – it’s to die for!).

  • Selsko Meso: a traditional Macedonian pork (or beef) and mushroom stew.

Pair your meal with Macedonian wine from a local winery, several of which are within 12km (7.5mi) of the Old Town. If you want to remain near the lake, consider a visit to Ohrid’s own Winery Mal Sveti Kliment, an exclusive and privately-owned Bed & Breakfast and boutique winery, located near the entrance to Ohrid’s Old Town. Here, you can sample some of the best wines in the region!

Accommodation in Ohrid

Accommodations Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

No matter your taste, style or budget, Ohrid offers accommodation options for everyone.

We opted to stay in the Old Town at Casa (Villa) Germanoff.  Our host, Nikola, was fantastic: incredibly responsive to all communication, helpful, and quick to assist whenever we needed him. He even found us in our rental car when we got a wee bit lost upon arrival in Ohrid…..

The villa is in a superb location in the Old Town with an incredible view – the photos from the Piano Room, where we chose to stay, perhaps don’t do it justice! The room had everything we needed and was incredibly spacious for just the two of us; overall it was very quiet (even on a Friday night with the bars and clubs nearby – we could hardly hear any of it).

You can find other excellent options options in the Old Town – find something that best fits your needs!

Getting to Lake Ohrid

Located in the southwestern part of North Macedonia, Lake Ohrid is easily accessible, making it an easy getaway for most travelers.

Lake Ohrid is easily accessible by car, bus, or plane, making it a convenient destination for travelers. Ohrid has a small international airport (though we flew into Skopje and drove a rental car along the stunning roads down to Ohrid), which receives flights from several European cities during the summer months. If you don’t want to drive, you can take a bus or taxi from Skopje to Ohrid.

For those traveling by car, Lake Ohrid is accessible via the E65 highway, which connects the town to Skopje and other major cities in North Macedonia. Parking is available in several public of Ohrid’s car parks throughout the city, though note it is not only challenging to find parking in the Old Town (if not impossible!), but also challenging to navigate the narrow, one-way streets with anything bigger than a Mini Cooper!). If you are staying in the Old Town and would like to keep your vehicle close, ensure ahead of time that your hotel has parking available.

By bus, Lake Ohrid is well-connected to several major cities in North Macedonia, including Skopje, Bitola and Struga. The local bus services are frequent and affordable, making them convenient for visitors to explore the region without the need for private transportation. Ohrid’s bus station is centrally located and tickets can be purchased either at the station or in advance online. The journey from Skopje to Ohrid takes around 3.5 hours (unless you’re like us and decide to take the super scenic route!), making it a comfortable and scenic trip.

Getting Around in Lake Ohrid

Getting around is easy once you’ve arrived in Lake Ohrid: we highly recommend exploring on foot. The town of Ohrid is compact and undoubtedly walkable, though be careful of the uneven cobblestone streets.

Taxis are also readily available for those who prefer not to walk.
